By train:

All major Croatian cities have a train connection, except Dubrovnik. Croatia has direct connections with Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Serbia and Montenegro, and indirect connections with almost all European countries.

By boat:

Croatian coastal cities are connected by ferries and ships. Inhabited islands are connected by ferries or boats from the coastal towns and cities. In the summer, ferry connections with islands are intensified. Summer schedule is valid from May 31st to September 28th. There are regular boat and ferry lines from Italy to Croatia.

The main Croatian shipping company that holds the main ferry and shipping lines is Jadrolinija.

  • SNAV
    Italian passenger shipping company with a high-speed boat line between Italy and Croatia (only 4 hours): Ancona, Civitanova, Giulianova and Pescara are connected with Split, Zadar and Croatian islands in this way. They also have a ferry line from Ancona to Split from the end of March to the beginning of November. This line makes a stop in Starigrad on the island of Hvar during July and August.

By car:

Croatia has excellent new freeways that can take you to your destination on the Croatian coast. If you are travelling by car, you need to bring your driver’s licence as well as your registration and insurance documents.

Parking spaces are available in marinas and a fee is payed for weekly parking. 

The general speed limits on Croatian roads are:

  • 50 km/h (31 mph) on urban roads
  • 90 km/h (56 mph) on non-urban roads
  • 110 km/h (68 mph) on expressways
  • 130 km/h (81 mph) on freeways

The limits shown above apply only if there are no other speed limit signs present, as the signs may prescribe a lower or a higher speed limit.

Lower speed limits apply to buses, heavy trailer and towing vehicles, and tractors.

Cell phone - while driving is prohibited.
The use of seat belt - use is mandatory.
The use of child seats is mandatory.

hgas stations
Modern gas stations with shops, cafes and restaurants are only 40 kilometres apart on the freeway leading to the Croatian coast. They are open 24 hours a day, 7 days of the week. There is a large number of gas stations on state roads, local roads and in towns. Their opening times vary from non-stop to the opening times from 6 am to 10 pm or 7 am to 7 pm.

Euro super 95, Euro super 98 and Euro Diesel are available on all gas stations, while larger gas stations also offer LPG.

During the high season in July and August, traffic jams may occur on the freeway leading to the Croatian coast. There are state road alternatives. Make sure to bring enough drinking water just in case.
